KEKAHA — Three 32-inch Vizio color television sets, three laptop computers, two Sony DVD players and a giant pizza party came to the Kekaha Elementary School 2011 Winter Festival on Friday.
These were the prizes awarded to the different recycled art projects created by the school, said John Ruiz, Waste Management of Hawai‘i district manager.
Jason Yotsuda said the students have been working on recycling projects for the past two months, and during November, in collaboration with Waste Management, the school celebrated recycle month, creating recycle art.
“Waste Management of Hawai‘i has become partners with Kekaha Elementary School and we have adopted November as recycle month,” Ruiz said. “This is an annual event which we have committed to and we look forward to working with the school to help the students understand the importance of recycling.”
The theme of the November recycle project was for students to use any recyclable material to build the best art project, Ruiz said.
First and second places in three divisions as well as two Honorable Mentions were announced by project name, the announcement eliciting squeals of excitement as each winning class representative was allowed to select from the pool of prizes.
“These are not individual prizes,” Ruiz said. “The items will remain at the school for the teachers and students do use.”
The “Kekaha Super Water Park” was announced tops for the Preschool, Kindergarten and Grade 1 division followed by the “Reusable Recycle Garden” getting top honors in the Grades 2-3 division. The “Fourth Grade Takes Off” earned top honors in the Grades 4-5 division, the first two winners claiming one of the 32-inch TV sets while the third one selected a laptop computer.
Second place honors in the PS, K, Grade 1 division when to “Christmas Pong,” while “Crazy Robot” was the runner-up for the Grades 2-3 division. “Greener Leaner” was the choice of judges for the Grades 4-5 division.
“A Float Boat” and “Rudolph the Recycling Reindeer” were the Honorable Mention choices.
