LIHU‘E — Makaha Ali‘i kicker Keoni Afong was four-for-four in point-after attempts and Blaise Gonzales tapped paydirt twice to lead the Ali‘i to a 32-7 showing over the host Kapa‘a Eagles, Saturday at the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League Mokihana Bowl at Vidinha Stadium.
Defensive jockeying opened the contest before the shifty Gonzales broke outside for a 42-yard touchdown in the first quarter, Afong following that score with his first of four successful PAT kicks.
Gonzales, breaking the tradition of breaking toward the middle, shifted out to outrun the Eagle defenders for a 64-yard score to open the second period, Afong doing the point-after honors for a 16-0 bulge.
But the Eagles finally found the end zone, answering that score with another as Braxton Garcia, on a keeper play, peeled off 65 yards to paydirt.
Garcia engineered a successful point-after with a hit to Leslee Aki for the 16-7 deficit.
But the period was not over as the Ali‘i Junior Midgets struck again, this time David Naki Kapahu Lessary, Jr. running for 49 yards, Afong’s PAT boot giving Makaha a 24-7 margin at the half.
The final score came in the fourth quarter when the Ali‘i engineered a passing touchdown when Koyo Penitani found Jonathan Joseph Louis on a 60-yard hit, Afong icing the score with another successful point-after boot for the 32-7 final.
