LIHU‘E — The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i are teaming up again this year and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size.
The names have been changed to protect their privacy.
Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Checks made payable to Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihu‘e, HI 96766.
For more information, call Yoshiko “Dimples” Kano, chair of The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund Committee, at 822-9882.
Household supplies would help
Jon is 25 months old with moderate hearing loss. He lives with his parents and sister in a multigenerational home.
Jon receives weekly occupational therapy and twice a month speech therapy from Easter Seals-Early Intervention Program.
Jon and his family would appreciate any assistance to buy food, household supplies and books. Case # ZE-19
A skateboard for Joshua
Maria has just found a house for herself and her two children (Joshua, age 7, and Jaime, age 4). The family is safe after years of abuse. Maria works full time and her pay covers just the basics with nothing left for extras. Christmas would be merrier with a skateboard for Joshua and a game board for Jaime. Case # ZG-1
Newborn could use crib toys
Jane has a 1-year-old and another baby on the way. She has been displaced due to domestic violence and is focused on finding a place before baby is born. It would be nice to alleviate some of her worries and anxieties with some cheerful gifts for both babies. Baby will be here for Christmas. Jarrod, her 1-year-old, would like a toy with musical sounds, and Jane would like diapers or crib toy for her newborn. Case # ZG-2
Darren likes action figures
Carol and her 2-year-old son were evicted because of domestic violence. She was then able to move back in because violent partner was out of the home and there was a restraining order. But now her part time salary mostly goes to rent since she is paying it all herself. There is very little extra for Christmas. Darren likes to play with trucks and action figures. Case # ZG-3
Help this family have a happy Christmas
Susan and her three children left home because of domestic violence. She was able to get help at the shelter and qualify for welfare and food stamps until she could get back on her feet. Because she is pregnant, she is unable to get a job in spite of her repeated attempts.
This Christmas money is very tight. Daughter Ally wants a drawing pad and coloring pencils, son Brian wants Lego’s (Ninjago) and Grace wants a tea set. Case # ZG-4
