HANAPEPE — The Kaua‘i High School girls Junior Varsity poured in four scores in the first half to open the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation soccer season, Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
The JV Red Raiders iced the 6-0 win over Waimea High School with two goals in the second half.
“I don’t know what the score is,” said Kaua‘i coach Kevin Devitt at the half. “But that is a good problem.”
Khaya Bunao opened the second half, netting her goal to cap a drive initiated by Mia Chun who passed off to Joni Hashizume before Bunao sealed the deal in the 49th minute.
Earlier in the game, Chun and Hashizume each netted goals toward the Kaua‘i 6-0 victory.
“Six goals, six different scorers, that’s good,” said Bill Prinzing, one of the KIF officials on that game. “They’re passing the ball around.”
Kaua‘i closed the game on a Kiana Pagador goal following a bottleneck at the goalmouth when the petite Kaua‘i forward was tied up by three Menehune defenders, everyone scrambling for a handle on the ball before Pagador goofy-footed the ball through traffic for the game sealer at the 65th minute.
Ealier in the game, Tailee Tangonan came out of nowhere to head in a nice cross to close the half, 4-0 in favor of the Raiders.
Ciara Delos Reyes nailed her goal in the first half to round out the Kaua‘i scoring.
KIF girls soccer continues Wednesday with a single game when Waimea varsity girls travel to take on the Kapa‘a Warriors in a single game starting at 4 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
The JV Menehune travel to Vidinha on Thursday for a single match against Kapa‘a starting at 4 p.m. while the Red Raider JV travel to Island School for an exhibition match, also starting at 4 p.m.
Saturday, Kaua‘i hosts Kapa‘a at Vidinha Stadium with the JV game starting at 10 a.m. followed by the varsity match starting at 11:45 a.m. Waimea will be at Island School for a single exhibition match starting at 10 a.m.
