Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi, author of “The Hawai‘i Book of Rice,” said she has relatives on Kaua‘i since her father used to grow rice here.
Cheryl was on hand Wednesday to sign copies of her book, a portion of which went to help Hawai‘i Food Bank, Kaua‘i Chapter. Michelle Panoke and Wes Perreira were on hand to help Cheryl, who was distributing rice paddles to people who bought her book or contributed to Hawai‘i Food Bank.
Chef Michael Simpson of Living Foods used one of her recipes to create risotto balls, something Melissa McFerrin was thrilled about because she can try it when she visits her sister on the Mainland.
Tommy Rita had his wife on hand to check out The Shops at Kukui‘ula and when he discovered Cheryl, she became famous.
The beauty of these community markets is there is something new every week… Barbara Oki had her coconut syrup (they have it at the Coconut Marketplace market, too) and Ken Yasutake had his family selling citrus (it’s a long wait until pineapple).
