The Poker Run coordinated by the Kaua‘i Harley-Davidson and the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity will roll out Saturday from the Kaua‘i Harley-Davidson store in Puhi.
Originally scheduled for last week, the event was postponed due to the inclement weather, said J.C. Crouch, the store manager at Kaua‘i Harley-Davidson.
Motorcycle enthusiasts and car enthusiasts — from classics to hot rods and street — are invited to participate. Registration starts at 9 a.m., followed by the roll-out at 10 a.m.
Riders and drivers may ride at their own pace to visit event sponsors, which include a stop at the Hanapepe ReStore, Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s thrift store. Other sponsor stops include Ishihara Market in Waimea, Brennecke’s Beach Broiler in Po‘ipu and Menehune Food Mart in Lawa‘i. Riders should be returning to the Kaua‘i Harley-Davidson by 1 p.m., where music, light pupus and prizes await.
The registration fee is $10 and proceeds will support Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s Repair and Renovation work for low-income veteran homeowners.
J.Q. Smith, a veteran of three major wars and co-Grand Marshall of the Veterans Day parade, was named the recipient of the first Habitat repair and renovation project.
Anne Dimock, the Development Director for Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity, said the project was made possible when Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity received seed money from Lowe’s Building Centers and Home Depot Foundation.
“Under this program, Habitat will perform repair and renovation work on deteriorating housing using its familiar self-help model,” Dimock said. “Proceeds from Saturday’s ride will be used to acquire the building materials needed to start work on Smith’s home, which has a leaking roof and water damage resulting from the leaks.”
Dimock said once the program is on its feet, Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity would like to expand the offering to all homeowners who qualify.
Crouch said the ride was pushed to Saturday so it would not interfere with the planned Ride for Keiki.
“We hope for better weather Saturday and everyone will come out and ride for this great program,” Crouch said. “J.Q. came out last Saturday and he is truly a deserving individual who deserves our support.”
