ROSWELL, N.M. — Former Waimea football player Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo continues to impress in his second season of college football.
After a freshman campaign in which Waalani-Arroyo earned the respect of his coaches and teammates with his hard work and consistent play as a member of the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos, Waalani-Arroyo has earned even bigger accolades this season.
Waalani-Arroyo was named last week to the second team of the 2011 All-Conference Western States Football League. The 6-foot-1 Waalani-Arroyo was also named one of the league’s top four safeties.
“He had a great off-season where he got stronger, faster and more confident on the field,” NMMI defensive coordinator Joe Forchtner said. “He’s the quarterback of our defense.”
Forchtner said Waalani-Arroyo’s confidence has increased over the past year and his leadership as one of the team’s captains has been vital in leading the National Junior College Athletic Association’s 12th-ranked Broncos to their ninth bowl game in school history.
“He’s the most vocal and strongest player on our defense,” Forchtner said. “We’ve put a lot on his shoulders and he’s done a great job.”
Waalani-Arroyo and the Broncos take on the NJCAA defending Navarro College Bulldogs in the 2011 C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl on Dec. 3 in Copperas Cove, Tex.
