The fifth-grade class at Island School is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair to help raise money for a five-day trip to the Big Island next March, according to a press release.
The book fair is open to the public, and it’s scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school’s Main Hall.
“Each spring, Island School’s fifth-grade class takes a trip to the Big Island where they meet and learn from experts in geology, volcanology and Hawaiian culture,” the press release states. “This year’s trip is scheduled for five days in March. Getting ready for this adventure is a yearlong project involving classroom studies, hands-on activities in their Hawaiian Studies class and fundraising.”
More than 2,000 Scholastic books will be available for purchase.
“Books for all age groups, pre-kindergarten through high school and adult, will complete your holiday shopping list,” says organizer Sandy Catlin, whose daughter, Quinn, is in the class.
To help shoppers make their selection, signs will be posted listing book titles according to age-level appropriateness.
“It can be a real challenge finding the right book for the right child,” says Catlin. “The signage should make it easy, plus the students will cruise the tables, answering questions.”
Island School is located directly behind Kaua‘i Community College. The Scholastic Book Fair will be in the Main Hall, located to the right of the main steps in the front of the school. For more information, contact the Island School Office at 808-246-0233.
