Kaua‘i’s Slam Musubi tennis team claimed the United States Tennis Association 7.0 Mixed Doubles National Championship Sunday afternoon in Tucson, Ariz.
The team, captained by Michelle Fitzgerald and comprised of Michael Fitzgerald, Michael Henthron, Nikki Matsumura, Rosemary Smythe, Madison Duarte, Adrian Alvarez, Shawn Morimoto, Susan Ham-Young and Ron Olen defeated a team from Bayamon, Puerto Rico in the championship match 3-0.
The Kaua‘i team advanced as the winner of its round-robin bracket in matches that took place on Friday and Saturday and then downed a team from New York City, 2-1, in Saturday night’s semifinal.
Sunday’s final against Bayamon was twice delayed by rain before Kaua‘i emerged victorious.
The Slam Musubi team was the representing team from USTA Hawai‘i Section.
The mixed doubles national championship included 39 teams this year in three different skill divisions.
