OZone edged out Fast Company for its first win, Thursday in the third week of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Gene Wells Series.
Fast Company controlled the first two weeks of the Wells series, but racing in a nine-vessel field under a good crowd of spectators, OZone slipped across the finish line about two minutes ahead of Fast Company for the win.
OZone finished the 5.5-mile course on a 1:05:33 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:05:39 PHRF for the win, Fast Company crossing on a 1:07:43 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:07:49 PHRF for runner-up honors.
Lelele, a T.Wells 30, held off Papa‘au, an Express 27, to settle in third place by just 17 seconds.
Lelele crossed on a 1:08:17 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:08:04 PHRF for the win over Papa‘au who crossed on a 1:11:24 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:08:21 PHRF.
But the heartache of being fourth was eased when Papa‘au corrected to 1:03:09 Club for top honors in that class.
Speedy, one of three Olson 30s who crowd the start, followed with a 1:10:26 elapsed sail, correcting to 1:10:33 PHRF.
Mapuana, a true Gene Wells 35 and the only Gene Wells vessel in the race, crossed on a 1:21:11 elapsed sail, correcting to 1:17:16 PHRF followed by the F-24 trimaran (1:15:05 elapsed, 1:18:51 PHRF), Coyote (1:26:10 elapsed, 1:20:42 PHRF) and Bonjolea (1:24:51 elapsed, 1:21:35 PHRF).
The series continues Thursday and the public is invited to view the competition when the first flags fly at 5 p.m. at the Nawiliwili Harbor.
