A giant hammerhead shark, a whimsical mermaid and a sleeping dragon sprouted on the shore of Hanalei Saturday afternoon. Hundreds of people gathered to watch novice and professional sand sculptors spend the afternoon carving original creations during the second annual Sand Art/Castle Contest.
Sand sculptor Jeff Peterson hosted a free workshop before the start of the competition. Entries included intricate castles, a replica of Hanalei Pier, a shaka, an Egyptian pyramid and a variety of marine wildlife, including an octopus, sea turtle and a humuhumunukunukuapua‘a (Hawai‘i’s state fish).
