Excel! Dance Camp 2011 starts July 18

The Excel! Dance Studio is accepting registration for its upcoming 2011 Dance Camp, said Sherri Sanchez Holcomb, director and founder of the Excel! Dance Studio.

This year, the event will be held July 18 through 21 at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center on Kapule Highway adjacent to the North Vidinha soccer fields.

The American Legion, Post 54, will be co-sponsoring the camp this year, said Rob Sanchez.

Earlier in the year, the Excel! Dance Studio All Stars earned commendations at a competition held in New Jersey, just 10 minutes outside of New York City. The contingent making the trip included 26 students and three coaches spread out between the Youth and Senior teams.

Holcomb said the Excel! Youth Team earned first place in Hip Hop, earned a judges choice award as “Hip Hop Hotties,” received one of two judges choice Choreography awards overall, and second place Overall.

The overall award means the group earned second place overall dance types in their age group, including jazz, lyrical, tap, Broadway, Show and more, Holcomb said.

The Excel! Senior Team took first place in Hip Hop and garnered a first place Overall against all dance types in their age group.

“My dancers did such an awesome job representing our island and state,” Holcomb said in an email. “I am extremely proud of them. They worked really hard for this.”

In the past, some of the members of the Excel! all star teams emerged from the annual dance camp which culminates with a special presentation for parents, friends and guests at the end of the three days of instruction and coaching.
