Kawaihau Bigs get past Maui, 7-3 in state semis

Tryson Soares picked up the win on the mound and helped his own cause with two hits to lead the Kawaihau Big League All-Stars to a 7-3 win over the Maui All-Stars in a semifinal game, Friday night at Wong’s Stadium in Hilo, Hawai‘i.

Soares and Mikeo Rita combined to allow eight Maui hits with seven strikeouts, Soares getting the nod for the win, said Michelle Correa, whose husband Kirk is on the coaching staff of the Kawaihau team.

Bronson Aiwohi and Kaimana Perreira-Alquiza each pegged doubles to lead the Kawaihau offense.

Dallas Correa, Soares, Shylen Keuma, Taran Tani and Jordan Kamakea each singled.

Michelle said most the boys from the Maui All-Stars attend either Baldwin High School or Kamehemeha-Maui.

With the win, Kawaihau Big League All-Stars face host Hilo for the championship, Saturday night in Hilo.
