A boy watches in amazement as a helicopter lands at Koke‘e State Park near the lodge. Medics transported a female tourist from the helicopter to an ambulance, which took off shortly after. A county spokesperson said firefighters from the Waimea station responded to a 1:52 p.m. call on Tuesday about an injured hiker on the Waimea Canyon Trail. Rescuers hiked into the area to find a 49-year-old female visitor from Minnesota with a severely swollen ankle. Firefighters brought the woman to the nearest landing zone, where Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 airlifted her to Koke‘e State Park. Awaiting medics then transported the woman to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
