Melissa Rapozo, 13, is the queen of OZone.

Rapozo was the junior aboard the Olson 30, which took the opening race of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Junior Series, Thursday under brisk 15-20 knot winds out of the North-northeast at Nawiliwili Harbor.

OZone made the three-leg sail with an elapsed sail of 1:06:36, correcting to 1:06:42 PHRF for the victory.

Fast Company, sporting Sol Trevino, 8, as its junior, followed on a 1:09:07 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:09:13 PHRF for the runner-up berth. Speedy, another Olson 30 sporting Amber Bail, 18, as its junior, was hot on Fast Company’s tail with a 1:10:52 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:10:59 PHRF.

Bonjolea, an Ex-342 sporting Krista Bolton, 14, as its junior, filled in the No. 4 berth on a 1:16:01 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:13:06 PHRF. She also corrected to a 1:03:31 CLUB for top honors in that class.

Papa‘au, hosting Ashley Orens, 11, as its junior, followed with a 1:25:02 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:21:24 PHRF, besting Coyote, whose junior, Riley, was on the Mainland. The C&C 38 was penalized despite outsailing Papa‘au on a 1:21:18 elapsed sail and 1:16:09 PHRF correction. Following the penalty, Coyote filled in the field.

The series continues Thursday and the public is invited to view the competition at no charge from the jetty wall area where the NYC Race Committee raises the first flags at 5 p.m.

OZone, which finished third on the first of three legs during the Around-The-Island Race over Memorial Day weekend, rebounted to take the remaining two legs of the race and edged out Malihini, a 35-foot catamaran piloted by Doug Gibson by a single point, 5-4 for first place.

Malihini took the 30-mile Nawiliwili to Hanalei run on a 4:00:06 elapsed sail and corrected to 4:06:10 PHRF.

Lelele, a Wells 30, made the trip in 4:10:16 elapsed, behind OZone’s 4:09:13 elapsed sail. But the PHRF correction put Lelele up by six seconds, OZone taking a 4:09:36 PHRF for third place.

OZone took the second leg, Hanalei to Port Allen, on an elapsed sail of 8:19:00 for the 38-mile journey, correcting to 8:19:46 PHRF over Mailihini (8:44:12 elapsed, 8:32:23 PHRF).
