Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis players, coming off a successful spring season, peppered the courts in five of the six divisions at the latest Kaua‘i Tennis Association Charity Doubles event, the Spring Classic, last week at the Po‘ipu Kai tennis courts.

Chas Okamoto, who just Saturday won the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state tennis championship in Boys Singles, teamed with Herb Noe to take the winner’s spot in the Men’s A division.
Okamoto and Noe opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win to advance before dropping to Gary Joseph and Brad Klontz, 6-1, 5-7, 0-1 in the finals, resulting in a three-way tie with all three teams in the division emerging with a win apiece.
Okamoto and Noe was awarded the win 8-5 with Joseph and Klontz getting the finalist nod.
Another KIF player, Lani Rae Green out of Waimea High School, teamed with fellow Menehune Brittney Barreira in the Women’s A division, but after opening with a 6-2, 6-4 win, dropped to the team of Michelle Martinez and Amy McLaughlin, 2-6, 3-6 for finalist honors, Martinez and McLaughlin emerging the victors with two wins in the division.
More Menehune took the court in the Men’s B division as Waimea coaches Kimo Honda and Scott Nakamatsu teamed to go against Charlie Ortiz and Dylan Wehrly in the finals, the dust settling with Ortiz and Wehrly prevailing over Honda and Nakamatsu, 6-4, 7-5 for the win.
Kaua‘i High School’s Shay Orial and Jennifer Grady teamed to go up against Mari Anderson and Beverly Coursey in the finals of WoMen’s B.
Despite taking a three-set match in the semifinals, the Anderson and Coursey team downed the high school players, 6-1, 6-3 for the title.
Ron Olen and Lito Odoya claimed the Men’s C division with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mike Morimoto and Kendal Kusaka, and the team of Shannon Burkman and Melanie Cerrias handed the duo of Annalissa Hartsell and Rachel Umetsu, both Waimea High School players, their first loss, 6-2, 6-3 for the title of the WoMen’s C division. Earlier, both teams advanced to the finals after claiming three wins apiece in the opening rounds.
