There are many Kaua‘i reggae bands, but there’s only one Revival.
Founded in 2000 by Kana Pikihi (bass player), Keola Akau (lead vocalist), and Evan Gibson (drummer), the band is known for playing pure reggae music. After playing for other bands for a few years, the three decided to start their own band, one that was strictly focused on reggae.
This family-oriented band is better known as “Revival.”
If you saw legendary group War jam out at Kilohana Plantation two Sundays ago, then you got blessed with a fun performance by these musicians too. Revival was the opening act for War, but it’s their home island so you know they held their own.
The group is blessed with so much talent. Joining the three founders are four more vocalists: Tyriss Manintin, Randall Boyer, Alika Simpson, and Keone Kaneholani.
Wearing multiple hats is Simpson, who is also the band’s main songwriter. And bringing keyboard flavor is DJ Yaris.
Together the group reaches a large loyal crowd that follows them on Facebook and on tour. Speaking of tours, they finished touring all over Hawai‘i with reggae artist Bambu Station and J Boog this past fall.
And if they are not touring, you can find them at one of the hottest night clubs here on Kaua‘i. They recently played at Richie’s Bar & Grill for their Bliss event to a sold-out crowd. This experience has given them an opportunity of a lifetime and has them wanting to headline a world tour.
Revival plays such feel-good music, one has to think everyrehearsal is a breeze. But like any other band, they come across issues here and there.
What is different about this group that makes them stronger over the years is its members’ outlook on life and respect for each other. Revival is such a diverse group of musicians with different personalities and ages, they flow with ‘ohana values.
Kana Pikihi (bass player) said, “We wing it, and work around each other. I know when to work around the other’s personality.”
When I asked him if he had advice for the younger generation of aspiring bands, he said, “Keep it all about the music, have one person do the business side, and if you do that, then the band will be more focused and stick together.”
With so much music in their souls, you would think they were cocky because they are so good at what they do. Not at all! When you meet them in person at their concerts or at the grocery store, they greet you with the same respect and aloha they give to their own tutus.
Revival is a very humble group of musicians who treat you as their equal. No matter where they are they never forget where they came from. This group is a class act to their own families and loyal fans. They will even take a moment to smile for your camera or take a picture with you. Lucky we on Kaua‘i and can claim them as our own reggae band. Once you listen to their music, you will find yourself “irie,” as reggae fans would put it.
If you would like to purchase their latest CD, “Roots Natty,” or listen to their music, go check out the websites www.hawaiianmusicstore.com and www.allmusic.com or buy them through iTunes.
“Moonlight” is a crowd pleaser and “Unko Bejo” is another strong tune. My favorite song is “Only one for me.” But don’t take my word for it, go check out their music for yourself.
