HANALEI — A 32-year-old Hanalei man was arrested Sunday night after crashing his vehicle into the Waipa Bridge, county officials said in a news release Monday.
According to police, Jocheam Finiiray, was heading east on Kuhio Highway when his Toyota Tacoma crossed the center line and struck the west end of Waipa Bridge.
Police were called to the scene at about 8:24 p.m. and arrested Finiiray for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, the release states. He was later released on bail.
Finiiray’s passenger, a 30-year-old male from Hanalei, was riding in the bed of the truck at the time of the collision and sustained a laceration to his head. Medics transported the man to Wilcox Hospital for further medical treatment. His current condition is unknown at this time, the release states.
The bridge was closed for about an hour and thirty minutes as crews worked to clear the vehicle from the roadway.
The pickup truck sustained extensive front-end damage. Minor damage was reported to the bridge.
