For instance, I have always had an appreciation for Japanese food. Being half Japanese, I always make time to enjoy some ono sushi. So where did I stumble upon this time to fulfill my sushi craving? Well, on St. Patrick’s night, I was lured into Sushi Bushido in Kapa‘a. Boy, was I in for a treat.
As I got there, Shilo Pa was playing some sweet local music and making the wahine excited, and I had choices on where to sit. I could sit by the sushi bar or the tables by the stage on the first floor, but of course I chose upstairs in a more exclusive area. Upstairs was surrounded with artwork of celebrities — it gave you a feel of San Fransico — and a flat-screen TV that displayed the band downstairs.
As soon as I got settled on my table, the waitress came with my menu. I couldn’t believe the awesome attention and service they provided. The menu blew me away too. Very creative and clever names of dishes like: No Foiling Around, which was my favorite. They definitely baked that dish by using aluminum foil, so I thought the name was fitting and cute. The flavors coming from that dish is amazing. The baked dish made with crab, shrimp, scallop, clam, mushroom and green onions in a sake aioli, topped with bonito flakes and sweet unagi sauce — well, let’s just say I wanted to Hawaiian out and sleep. It was that good!
The wine selection was superb and went well with the sushi I ordered. And fellows, don’t worry — they do have sake to complement your sushi. They have something for everyone. If you’re not the sushi going type, then try the teriyaki chicken, a safe way to get a taste of Bushido’s style of cooking. And you could stay comfortable and step out of your element by having some green tea ice cream. But if you’re like me, the Bushido Balls (Japanese Sweet potato doughnuts, coated with cinnamon and sugar) will excite you and fulfill your need of trying something new.
I really like the upstairs floor. It’s different from the prior location in Nawiliwili. The new location in Kapa‘a at the Dragon Building right next to the ABC store is the bomb. Excuse my slang, but what can you say? Everyone who steps into Sushi Bushido feels honored to be there. Speaking of honor, the name Bushido means military knight ways, which consist of wisdom and traditional Japanese ways, like honor, responsibilities and privileges. You may find the true definition of the restaurant’s name in the menu as you browse through it.
Sushi Bushido is located on Kukui Street in Kapa‘a and open for dinner seven days a week. Lunch hours are noon to 3 p.m., Tuesday-Friday. They have a Sunday buffet, which is from 10 to 2 p.m. Hours may vary, so call (808) 822-0664 to confirm or check out their Facebook page.
So show off your wisdom by defending your stomach’s honor and visit Sushi Bushido for a powerful selection of sushi delights that will reward you for your extraordinary courage to step up your sushi game.
