KALAHEO — A fire Monday evening severely burned a two-bedroom Kalaheo home, causing nearly $200,000 in damages, according to a county press release.
No one was home at the time of the incident.
Firefighters from Kalaheo and Hanapepe fire stations, with the help of the Rescue 3 truck, extinguished the blaze at about 9:21 p.m., after a neighbor reported the fire less than an hour earlier.
The wooden home is located on Kaumuali‘i Highway, in the vicinity of the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, according to the release.
Following the fire, American Red Cross volunteers went to the scene to meet with affected residents and ensure their immediate emergency needs for food, shelter and clothing are met, a Red Cross press release said. Red Cross caseworkers will continue to follow up with residents in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed to help with the recovery process.
The Red Cross encourages all families to make a disaster plan to include an evacuation plan with two different escape routes, a communications plan to help families reconnect after a disaster and a disaster supplies kit readily available to aid in a quick evacuation.
