Having to win four games in four days is a tall task, especially against the best competition in the state.
Yet that’s exactly what Kamehameha-Kapalama accomplished Saturday night, as it completed its run through the Division I bracket of the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships with a 64-53 win over No. 1 seed ‘Iolani at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Kapalama (16-2) was led by Micah Christenson’s 21 points and seven rebounds, both team highs.
Shane Yoshida followed with 10, while Dyrbe Enos, Charlton Tang and Frank Ho all scored eight points apiece.
Reid Saito led ‘Iolani (15-2) with 15 points and Trevyn Tulonghari added 13.
Kapalama used a 13-2 run in the third and fourth quarters to increase a three-point lead up to 14 at 49-35. ‘Iolani never got closer than eight the rest of the way and settled for second place.
Christenson was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player for his efforts.
The Kamehameha school dominated the event, outscoring its opponents by an average final score of 75-49.
Kahuku took third place in the tournament, finishing with a 69-53 win over Academy of the Pacific. Shairone Thompson had a game-high 21 points for Kahuku to go with nine rebounds. Drew Vienna led AOP with 13.
Radford held on for a 41-40 win over No. 2 Moanalua in the fifth-place game. Tony Reid paced the victors with 19 points. Dexter Williams had 10 for Moanalua.
The media chose Micah Dunhour (AOP), Tulonghari (‘Iolani), Thompson (Kahuku), Saito (‘Iolani) and Enos (Kapalama) for the Div. I All-Tournament Team.
Division II
Farrington proved worthy of the top seed in the Division II bracket, winning the state title with a 58-45 victory over No. 2 seed Pahoa, Saturday night.
The Governors (18-1) ran out to a big lead, using a 14-2 run in the early going to take a 19-5 lead just seconds into the second quarter. A 3-pointer by Chadey Collazo gave Farrington its biggest lead of the night at 32-13 with a minute to play in the opening half.
Pahoa responded by putting together a 10-0 run that spanned from the end of the second through the middle of the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Devin Gonsalves brought it back to just a six-point game at 38-32 with 7:37 left in the fourth, but Farrington stayed the course and didn’t let Pahoa any closer.
It was a balanced effort for the champs as Lancelot Williams led his team in both points and rebounds with 13 and 15, respectively. J.P. Saycon followed with 11 points and six assists. Michael Kleman and Clem Rarogal each scored nine.
Nicklas Fisher finished his monster tournament with another big performance for Pahoa with 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead his team in both categories. Khalil Luis follwed with eight points.
Farrington shot 54 percent (21 for 39) from the floor, compared to just 30 percent (14 for 47) for Pahoa.
Third place went to University High School, which was a 61-33 winner over No. 3 seed Island Pacific. Benjamin Keller had a game-high 16 points for University.
Fifth place was won by McKinley, which closed the game on an 18-9 run to pick up a 43-40 win over St. Joseph. McKinley’s Jason Ramano, Rio Kwon and Wilhem Rivera each scored eight points, while St. Joseph’s Thomas Fairman had a game-high 17.
The Division II All-Tournament Team, as selected by the media, was made up of Fisher (Pahoa), Theo Duplechain (Island Pacific), Williams (Farrington), Guilherme Aires (University) and Alex Ironside (McKinley), while Farrington’s Saycon was named Most Outstanding Player.
