LIHU‘E — Judge Calvin Murashige was honored by his collegues, family friends and the staff of the state Judiciary during a luncheon last week.
Murashige’s final day as a family court judge was Thursday.
“My term expires June 24, 2011, but I thought retiring at the end of the year was good,” Murashige said. He was sworn in as a judge on June 25, 1999.
Prior to that, Murashige was a lawyer on Kaua‘i after being sworn in to the state BAR in 1974.
He served terms with the state Attorney General’s office and the Office of Prosecuting Attorney before turning to private practice with the firms of Shiraishi, Yamada and Murashige.
Murashige’s family, including wife Gail, son Steven’s family of Naoko, Katie and Emily, and daughter Christine’s family of Matt and Maile Koidin hosted a luncheon for the court staff as an expression of appreciation for the support and friendship he received during his years of service on the bench.
Judge Randal Valenciano presented Murashige with tokens of appreciation from the state Judiciary, as well as the Hawai‘i State Trial Judges Association.
Retired judge Alfred Laureta took the opportunity to get everyone singing a tribute to Murashige.
Murashige, who fought back his emotions in bidding farewell to the Judiciary staff, said he will be spending more time with his family, especially his grandchildren, but beyond that he has no other immediate plans for his retirement.
