LIHU‘E — The annual Kaua‘i Hospice candle-lighting memorial service is 5:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at Immaculate Conception Church in Kapaia, a press release states.
Community members are invited to participate in the hour-long program and light a candle as a glowing symbol of remembrance and affection for friends and family no longer here.
It takes courage to grieve and honor the pain carried, particularly during the holiday season when the world is celebrating, the release states.
The candle-lighting memorial is one way Kaua‘i Hospice can offer comfort, respite and meaningful support to the island community.
The program is free and open to all members of the public, as well as visitors.
“As the holidays approach, many of us will gather with family and friends,” said the Rev. Caroline Miura, spiritual-care coordinator at Kaua‘i Hospice.
“More often than not, these gatherings include reminiscing about loved ones, re-telling funny family stories, and the sharing of honored traditions year after year,” she said.
“This emphasis on remembrance can be quite difficult for those coping with loss,” said Miura.
“For family, friends and neighbors facing grief after the death of a loved one, the holidays may actually be a time filled with pain and sadness,” she said.
“The holidays may serve as an annual reminder of the loss — not only of that person, but of tradition and celebration.”
Ibbie White Alshamma will share moments from her personal journey through grief as this year’s guest speaker.
Once again, the Kapa‘a Middle School Choir and ‘Ukulele Band, under the direction of Mary Lardizabal, will perform several musical selections for the community.
Ron Wiley from KONG Radio Group and Sister Florence Remata from Immaculate Conception Church will recite the names of loved ones who have died or who are far away.
Immediately following the program, there will be an informal reception with refreshments.
Many people may not be aware of the support hospice care professionals offer to members of the community who are struggling with grief during the holiday season.
