Drug use is not victimless
Obviously, Mr. Tamm has never been the victim of a drug-related crime — which, by the way is currently rampant world-wide (“Let drug-users be,” Letters, Nov. 19).
Robberies and murders, torture by drug lords and drug dealers. Children killed or brain damaged from living with drugged out parents in their meth labs. The owners of rental units holding the meth labs who have to destroy their own property because the fumes and residue from the production of the meth permeates the walls of the building at the same time it is destroying the minds of those children. Residue which cannot be removed. Buildings must be destroyed.
Nor is he the parent of a child who had died a drug ravaged death, or gone to jail for some horrendous crime he doesn’t remember committing… i.e. the man who threw the baby off the bridge in Honolulu.
Nor is he the parent of a child who left the island because of conflict with a parent over his drug use and has never been heard from since. You tell me which is worse? The child in jail or not knowing if your child is alive or dead… even 20 or 30 years after they left? He/she is still your child, no matter how old they get. Not knowing is agony. I could go on; but I won’t.
Drug use is not victimless. I can only hope you were writing out of ignorance and not because you were trying to justify your own use of the product.

Kaua‘i blessed with tremendous youth
In a world sometimes marked by negativity, criticism, and fear of nearly everything and everyone, we desire to add some positive affirmations about Kaua‘i and its youth, ones we have noted over the past six months, beginning with the graduation ceremony for the Kaua‘i High School Class of 2010.
Kindly, the Kaua‘i Board of Education and KHS Administration participated in bestowing our father, James Kimokeo, an Honorary High School Diploma, made possible by federal mandate for all foreign and domestic veterans of our armed forces whose education was delayed by their call to service. While our family and friends were in attendance at the commencement, we were struck by the fantastic behavior of the entire KHS Class of 2010. They were respectful, appeared to understand the importance of this life milestone called graduation, and were mature and polite in their conduct. We did not notice even one staff member in the student seating area. We have been to hideous graduations where a multitude of adult supervisors failed to contain the antics of various senior classes. BRAVO Kaua‘i High School Class of 2010 for honoring yourselves, your accomplishments, your faculty, your families and others who love you, all who came to witness this important event in each of your lives. KHS Class of 2010, you each made your graduation something you can look back on with pride.
Recently, we attended the Veteran’s Day Parade in Kapa‘a and again, KHS appeared with their superb KHS Marching Band. The entire band highly honored the veterans in particular, by the beautiful music they played, the well practiced marching, their sharp, attractive uniforms, and the positive effort they demonstrated. Kudos to members of the KHS Marching Band and the band’s director. We were also impressed with the ROTC Marching Units from all island high schools. The participation and enthusiasm of each ROTC member added much to the patriotic spirit of the day and we are grateful for the attendance of these fine young adults.
Kaua‘i is abundantly blessed with some tremendous young people and a large cadre of adults who walk beside and steer them in positive directions. Long may this blessing exist, grow, and blossom on this beautiful Garden Island.
Kimo and Deborah Kimokeo, Anahola
Debate not about civil unions
This letter is in response to Mr. Mann’s Nov. 20 letter.
Sir, I suggest you read my letter again. It was in no way shape or form suggesting that civil unions would lead to pedophilia or bestiality. I was suggesting that if we let the churches decide who is able to wed that could lead to the aforementioned and other things.
Anyone can get a license on the Internet to be a minister was my “point” and that could lead to a problem giving them control.
Another point I was making for “the legion of rational thinkers” was that I am against separationism. Please, sir, become one of the rational thinkers and not use every point or counterpoint to try and push your agendas.
As I also stated in my letter, “We all want our family members and friends to be with the person they love.” What part of that statement is not for all persons gay or not. Chillax.
