LIHU‘E — Jeni Kaohelauli‘i, Darci Furtado and Shannon Hiramoto have more in common than their trunk show tomorrow at Work It Out in Kapa‘a.
These three young woman are all from Kaua‘i, they own their own businesses and strongly believe in sustainability.
They decided to collaborate on a trunk show, which will feature never-before-seen pieces from Hiramoto’s label, MachineMacine, and Aveda products and accessories from Furtado’s newly opened nail and hair salon, Epic Hair Boutique.
“It’s something to do with your girlfriends and a fun way to socialize,” Kaohelauli‘i said.
“We’re trying to keep Kaua‘i fresh with different events and different things to do.”
Kaohelauli‘i is owner of Work It Out, an active-lifestyle shop in Kapa‘a that opened on Kuhio Highway in 2008. Furtado recently opened a hair and beauty salon, Epic Hair Boutique, and Hiramoto’s clothing line MachineMachine is starting to pop up in boutiques around the state.
The three decided to team up together for a trunk show titled “Head in the Clouds.”
“Jeni and I talked about it, and we came up with the theme ‘Head in the Clouds,’” Hiramoto said.
“It was a good marriage between the whimsical nature of the showing and hair.”
Hiramoto plans to bring a variety of new pieces to the trunk show.
“I want to do some new designs that I haven’t sold anywhere yet,” the designer said. “I’m going to bring some dresses and other things I normally wouldn’t send to Work It Out because they are an active-lifestyle store.”
Each of Hiramoto’s pieces are handmade by the designer, and she estimates that 80 percent of the pieces she creates are made from vintage fabrics found at thrift stores and garage sales. The designer said she hopes to be creating her own fabrics soon. But Hiramoto’s creativity doesn’t stop at the sewing machine. The designer is planning to create an art installation for the trunk show tomorrow for guests to enjoy.
In addition to perusing never-before-seen pieces of Hiramoto’s clothing line, Furtado will offer hair consultations, makeup tips and hand massages to customers.
“We want to make it a fun girl’s night out,” Furtado said. “It ties in with the whole beautifying yourself (theme). Girls can come in with new hair and a new bag. It’s a fun place for women to come and look at different things.”
Guests receive a free gift with purchases over $100, and the first 100 guest receive a “sweet” surprise.
Kaohelauli‘i and Furtado, who met in seventh grade and has been buddies since, make it a priority to go out of their way and support local designers.
“Head in the Clouds,” a trunk show with MachineMachine and Epic Hair Boutique presented by Work It Out, is from 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Work It Out, 4-1312 Kuhio Hwy., Kapa‘a. For more information, call 823-8111.
