LIHU‘E — The problem with Koke‘e Road in Koke‘e State Park is one of jurisdiction and Gov.-elect Neil Abercrombie has vowed to be the one who solves this problem, said state Sen. Ron Kouchi, D-Kaua‘i-Ni‘ihau.
Kouchi said he found out that Koke‘e Road up to the entrance to Koke‘e State Park is under the jurisdiction of the state Department of Transportation Highways Division.
But that after the entrance, when the road takes a dramatic turn for the worse in terms of maintenance, it becomes the responsibility of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
And it is very difficult to maintain a road when your department doesn’t have a road-maintenance crew, Kouchi said.
Abercrombie, in a meeting Monday with state Senate Majority Caucus Leader Kouchi and other Senate leaders, pledged to encourage some interdepartmental cooperation to get the park road fixed, said Kouchi.
