LIHU‘E — A dozen of the top teams from across the state will be competing for Hawai‘i’s most coveted crown in the 21st annual First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Football State Championships, which get underway today in both Divisions I and II.
The three-week tournament will begin with three of the four quarterfinal games played today, with the final one taking place at Vidinha Stadium at 4:30 p.m. Saturday between the Kalaheo Mustangs (6-3) and fourth-seeded Kaua‘i Red Raiders (7-1).
The first Div. II quarterfinal matchup will be tonight as No. 3 seed Kaimuki (9-0) will take on Kamehameha-Hawai‘i (11-1) at 7 p.m. at the Kamehameha field in Kea‘au on the Big Island. Kaimuki is coming off a 48-12 win over Kalaheo in the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association White Division title game.
The winner of tonight’s game will face No. 2 seed Lahainaluna (7-2) in next Friday’s semifinal contest (7 p.m., War Memorial Stadium, Maui).
The winner of Saturday’s Kaua‘i-Kalaheo game will take on top-seeded ‘Iolani (7-3) on Nov. 20, kicking off at 2:30 p.m. at ‘Iolani School on O‘ahu.
Today’s Div. I action will consist of No. 3 seed Baldwin (9-1) taking on Leilehua (7-2), beginning at 6 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium on Maui. No. 2 Saint Louis (9-1) awaits the winner in a Nov. 19 semifinal contest (4 or 7 p.m., Aloha Stadium).
Also in Div. I action today will be No. 4 seed Kealakehe (10-1) taking on Waianae (4-5) at Waianae High School on O‘ahu. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. The winner will advance to a semifinal matchup with top seed Mililani (7-1) on Nov. 19 (4 or 7 p.m., Aloha Stadium).
OC16 will broadcast tonight’s Baldwin-Leilehua game live from Maui.
The Div. I semifinal doubleheader on Nov. 19 will also be broadcast live on OC16, followed by the Div. I and II championship doubleheader on Nov. 26. The Div. II championship game will kick off at 4 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. start for the Div. I showdown.
Neighbor island orders will be $14.95 prior to game day ($29.95 on O‘ahu), while orders on game day will cost $24.95 ($49.95 on O‘ahu).
