LIHU‘E — The visiting Spartans scored 72 points in two days and did not allow its hosts a single score at Vidinha Stadium.
Brad Hiranaka, the president of the Kaua‘i Youth Football League, said the Spartans are from the Pacific Youth Athletics based out of Kaneohe, O‘ahu, and are ranked second in the Ewa division.
On Sunday, Spartan quarterback Colton Nascimento got strong blocking from his line as he connected for two touchdown passes and one point-after play to help lead the blueshirts to a 34-0 win over Na Koa at Vidinha Stadium.
Hiranaka said on Saturday, the Spartans also triggered the running clock with a 38-0 win over the Kaua‘i Bulldogs.
“You’ve got to give these Kaua‘i kids a lot of credit,” said Michael Alonzo, filming the games. “They’re a lot smaller than the visiting O‘ahu players, but they’re hanging in tough.”
Christopher Tuiasosopo got the Spartans on the board in the second quarter, breaking open a 0-0 stalemate with an 80-yard touchdown run for the 8-0 lead.
With just 28 ticks remaining in the half, Nascimento found Sione Misinale in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown, that score coming after Nascimento unsuccessfully tried connecting with Raymond Caayon, a strong pass receiver for the blueshirts.
Tuiasosopo capitalized on a Na Koa turnover, plucking an Austyne Carvalho-Toloai pass in the third quarter and running it back 44 yards for a touchdown, the first of two in that period.
Nascimento found Caayon on the point-after pass play to give the Spartans a 22-0 lead.
With 3:00 showing in the period, Nascimento took to the air, connecting with David Tiumalu for a 55-yard touchdown and the 28-0 read after three quarters.
Turnover exchanges late in the game saw the Spartans reap one more touchdown, triggering the running clock for the second time in as many days.
Hoku Ho put the cherry on the offensive efforts demonstrated by Carvalho-Toloai and Brayden Keoho-Apilado, his efforts resulting in a second-half injury sidelining him for the remainder of the game, and Rudy Agoot.
Ho plucked a Nascimento pass only to have the Spartans return the favor with an interception of its own as Peter Sese landed the ball on Na Koa’s 14-yard line with the minutes ticking down.
Siaosi Pakileata found the end zone for the final touchdown at the 4:45 mark and the 34-0 final read as Sese put the period on the game, intercepting another Na Koa pass for the final play of the match.
Kaua‘i Youth Football has another season game scheduled for Saturday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park Stadium with the Elementary Division kicking off at 8 a.m. followed by the Intermediate division kicking off at 10 a.m.
The KYF season continues through Nov. 28.
