OZone jumped to an early lead and worked through a shortened course to pick up a first finish, Thursday at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Lloyd Rees Memorial Series, Race No. 5.
The first finish puts her ahead in the standings with another win in the series.
Sharon Gibson, the NYC scorekeeper, said the wind was light and OZone got an early lead and just kept putting more distance between her and Fast Company, a strong contender throughout the six-race series.
The course measured at 3.71 miles after being cut from its original short-long-short course because of the setting sun and the light wind that blew between 5-15 knots.
OZone crossed the line on an elapsed time of 43:57 and corrected to 44:01 PHRF for the first-place finish.
Fast Company, taking to the grill with barbecued salmon for the post-race festivities, crossed on a 46:05 elapsed and corrected to 46:09 PHRF for second place.
Papa‘au, crossing fourth on a 50:25 elapsed sail, corrected to 48:16 PHRF and third place, relegating Speedy, who crossed third over Papa‘au, to fourth and corrected to 49:36 PHRF for the placement.
Malihini finished with an elapsed sail of 50:00 and corrected to 51:16 PHRF, followed by Coyote (56:14 elapsed, 52:40 PHRF) and Bonjolea (56:37 elapsed, 54:26 PHRF) rounding out the field.
Coyote corrected to 43:40 Club for first in that division, followed by Speedy (45:01 Club), Bonjolea (47:36 Club), and Malihini (48:44 Club).
The public is invited to view the final race of the series, Thursday when the first flags fly at 5 p.m. from the Nawiliwili Harbor jetty wall area.
