LIHU‘E — History has a colorful presentation at Ship Store Galleries in Kapa‘a, a press release states — Hawai‘i during the turbulent 19th century.
This era of drastic change and upheaval is told through the artwork of maritime historian Raymond Massey, and presented by the publishers of the Pacific Journal, Dr. John Lydgate and Tammi Andersland.
“Voyages Through Time” takes participants through Hawai‘i looking at what happened to Hawai‘i from the moment Capt. James Cook, R.N., first arrived in the late 18th century. The islands were thrust from a sophisticated primitive culture to the modern world and exposed to diseases that they lacked natural immunities to fend.
Lydgate named the series “From Monarchs to Missionaries” because Native Hawaiians went from an ali‘i ruling class to the arrival of Cook, the whalers, missionaries, sugar planters, migrant laborers, seekers of fortune and to near extinction.
“We started these presentations because we want to share what really happened to Hawai‘i and her people,” Andersland said.
“Many who vacation here have no idea how rich the history of these islands is.”
Ship Store Galleries in Kapa‘a moved this year from the Coconut Marketplace, where it operated for over 25 years, to the heart of downtown Kapa‘a, directly across the street from Eastside restaurant.
“We encourage the local families to come as well as visitors,” Lydgate said.
Lydgate’s family came to Hawai‘i in 1865, settling in Hilo on the Big Island.
His grandfather J.M. Lydgate after attending Yale became a minister and settled on Kaua‘i.
Presentations are from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays.
