LIHU‘E — The state Public Utilities Commission on Thursday denied Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative’s request to raise rates by around 10.45 percent, a PUC press release states.
The commission approved a net increase of just under 2 percent, saying KIUC’s proposals to tap members to cover incentive employee compensation and salary increases “were unreasonable for rate-making purposes in the current down economy.”
The effect of the PUC’s Thursday final decision and order is that the 1.98-percent increase approved initially by the PUC in April and effective in May will become the final rate increase in this rate case.
