Tyler Navarro, an aspiring electrical engineer, was awarded $1,000 as the recipient of the 2010 Lee Anne Cox Scholarship.
Navarro, a 2010 graduate of Kaua‘i High School, is at Purdue University pursuing his major in electrical engineering.
Ranked No. 1 in the Kaua‘i High School Class of 2010, he was a valedictorian at the commencement ceremonies and also served as the captain of the Red Raiders air rifle team among his numerous achievements.
After learning of his award, Navarro said he would like to follow in Cox’s footsteps, perhaps establishing a scholarship after he graduates from college.
Cox was a 2001 graduate of Kaua‘i High School and went on to pursue degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics at Texas Christian University, graduating in 2005.
Two years later, Cox received double master’s degrees from Duke University in electrical engineering and engineering management.
She is currently a systems engineer for Raytheon, a defense contractor.
The Lee Anne Cox Scholarship was started in 2009 by Cox because she felt that Kaua‘i High School had fully prepared her for college and wanted to give back to her alma mater by helping students from Kaua‘i High School.
In 2009, Cox awarded a $500 scholarship to a Kaua‘i High School graduate who would be majoring in an engineering field in college.
When Raytheon discovered the young lady’s cause, they offered to match her $500 resulting in Navarro receiving a $1,000 scholarship.
Tina Cox, Lee Anne’s mother, is proud of the gesture started by her daughter and hopes other alumni of Kaua‘i schools become inspired to do the same.
