LIHU‘E — Alley Kat Art is hosting a weekend silver-art-clay workshop by world-renowned and award-winning artist Gordon Uyehara Sept. 11 and 12 in Kapa‘a.
Published in and featured on the cover of Art Jewelry magazine, Uyehara will teach techniques in forming silver clay into fine jewelry.
Silver-metal clay, also known as precious-metal clay, is a unique material utilizing pure recycled silver particles in an organic binder in a clay material easily manipulated into designs, sometimes adding semi-precious stones and glass. After drying, the silver-clay pieces are fired to temperatures that burn out the organic binder and fuse the silver particles into solid, wearable, pure-silver jewelry.
The basics of using this material include kneading, rolling, texturing, shaping, drying, joining, using fireable stones, refining, firing and finishing.
Then students will combine the clay with dichroic glass to make pendants and learn to use a two-part silicone mold mix for capturing manmade and natural forms to use with silver clay.
Students will also create funky, fine-silver rings. Uyehara will discuss correct sizing, design variations, decorating, and the use of plugs. The weekend will close with a short demonstration and discussion of the new ACS copper clay.
Cost is $275 which includes silver and other items in the kit. Sign up deadline and payment due Sept 1. To register contact Kathy at 651-1766 or kat@alleykatart.com. Visit honudream.com for more on Uyehara.
