LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i residents and visitors are expected to gather on the lawn of the Historic County Building from 3 to 5 p.m. today to protest Washington, D.C. corruption, a press release states.
Organizers of similar rallies across the country (most starting at noon in Hawai‘i) will stand for democracy and in support of moveon.org, which is calling on national leaders to:
— Overturn the Citizens United 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled corporations are “people” entitled to free-speech rights and spending unlimited amounts of money on political campaigns is a form of free speech. It will take a constitutional amendment to overturn this decision. Overturning the decision would fully reinstate the landmark McCain-Feingold campaign-reform law;
— Pass the Fair Elections Now Act which provides public financing to candidates who are supported by small donors;
— Pass the Lobbyist Reform Act that would end the overwhelming influence of corporate lobbyists by: prohibiting individuals from switching from corporate lobbying to government service, or vice versa, within a five-year period; stopping corporate lobbyists from giving gifts and providing free travel to government officials.
