LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association will host the 2010 State of Hawai’i Ocean Safety and Drowning Prevention Conference on Aug. 12 and 13 at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort & Beach Club, a county news release says.
“Ocean Safety Strategies during Tough Economic Times” is the theme for this year’s conference.
Presentations will be made on the boxed jellyfish, drowning prevention for kids, hypothermic treatment of drowning patients, injury prevention, ocean safety as covered in Kaua‘i guidebooks, and more.
In addition, each county and other government agencies will provide an update on ocean safety efforts in their respective areas, including a report from Peter Davis, lifeguard chief, with the Island Beach Patrol in Galveston, Texas.
One of the highlights of the conference is the Team Waterman Challenge, which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Kalapaki Beach. So far, four teams have signed up for the competition.
Lifeguards, emergency medical personnel, and anyone involved in the visitor industry are encouraged to attend the conference and gain valuable insight on ocean safety.
The $150 conference fee includes: continental breakfast; lunch; dinner; conference materials; and attendance at all sessions.
