LIHU‘E — Registration is still being accepted for a six-week series of interactive workshops for seniors 60 years and older with chronic health conditions and their caregivers, a county news release states.
“This program has enhanced the lives of so many Kaua’i kupuna,” said Kealoha Takahashi, executive of the Agency on Elderly Affairs. “I strongly encourage seniors who haven’t taken the workshop to sign up for it.”
The workshops titled “Ke Ola Pono: Healthy Living” will be held in two locations, starting the week of July 26:
— Lihu‘e Civic Center, Pi‘ikoi Building, conference rm. A, Tuesdays, 9 to 11:30 a.m.
— Lihu‘e Baptist Church, Thursdays, 9 to 11:30 a.m.
To gain maximum benefit from the program, participants should plan on attending all six sessions.
The cost of the workshops is $12 for seniors 60 years and older, and it includes a companion book and a relaxation CD/audio tape.
Registration is limited to 16 participants and their caregivers. Scholarships are available.
If space is available, people younger than 60 years can attend the workshops for a $40 fee.
Participants will be introduced to practical skills for healthy living while managing ongoing health conditions, i.e. arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.
Among the topics to be covered are: techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance; appropriate use of medications; how to evaluate new treatments; nutrition; and communicating effectively with family, friends and health care professionals.
The workshops are sponsored the Agency on Elderly Affairs in partnership with the Kaua‘i District Health Office, and are part of a statewide initiative called Healthy Aging Partnership – Empowering Elders.
To register for the workshops or to request materials in an alternate format or an auxiliary aid in order to participate in the workshops, call Charlyn at the Agency on Elderly Affairs at 241-4470 at least five business days before the start of the workshops.
