LIHU‘E — A Harold Aiu Memorial Rodeo will be held July 10-11 at CJM Stables in Po‘ipu.
Aiu earned the title of All-Around Cowboy for Kaua‘i eight times and was inducted into the Hawai‘i Paniolo Hall of Fame in 1999.
He was inducted into the Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2001.
After more than 60 years as a cowboy, Aiu was honored as a Living Treasure by the Kaua‘i Museum.
In 1995, Aiu won the Team Roping event at the Makawao Rodeo, then, in 1998, took home his third trophy in Team Roping at the age of 78.
Aiu passed away July 5, 2009, two days before his 89th birthday. He was still competing in rodeos just a month earlier.
Both days of the upcoming event will begin at 10 a.m., with free admission.
There will be plenty of paniolo action, with the Grand Entry, followed by Team Roping, Wahine Barrel Racing, Junior Barrel Racing and Double Mugging.
Contestants will sign up to enter the day of the event. Trophy buckles and prizes will be awarded.
