LIHU‘E — Having won the Kaua‘i Protect Our Nation’s Youth Mustang and Bronco baseball championships, the Lihu‘e All-Stars will be competing in the PONY state tournament, which begins today in Hilo.
The Lihu‘e Mustangs earned the right to head to the Big Island with a 7-6 comeback victory over West Kaua‘i on June 9.
It was a 6-0 victory, also over West Kaua‘i, that gave the Lihu‘e Broncos the Sectional title and moved them into their respective state tournament.
Action kicks off today at the Walter Victor Baseball Complex.
The Lihu‘e Broncos will get started this morning at 8 a.m. against Maui.
The Lihu‘e Mustangs will take the field this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. against Mililani.
The Mustang division is for players 9-10 years old, while the Bronco division is for players 11-12 years old.
Eight teams in each division came from throughout the state of Hawai‘i and will compete in the double-elimination tournaments. Competitors from the Big Island, O‘ahu and Maui will also be in the mix, all playing for the right to advance to the Western Zone competition in California, where a berth in the PONY World Series will be at stake.
The Hilo tournament runs from today through Tuesday, with a full slate of games starting at 8 a.m. during the first three days of the competition.
There will be an opening ceremony at 11 a.m. today in order to recognize all the teams competing in the event.
The championship rounds will be played on Monday, then extending to Tuesday, if necessary.
