LIHU‘E — Members of Kaua‘i’s public-school Class of 2010 brought home a lion’s share of awards handed out this year by the Hawai‘i Rotary Youth Foundation, including the only two, $10,000 awards, states a press release.

The HRYF awarded $325,000 in college scholarships to 65 Hawai‘i 2010 graduates.
Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan, founder of Foodland, created the foundation in 1976, and since then HRYF has awarded 1,405 scholarships to Hawai‘i high school seniors totaling $4,830,263.
The 2010 HRYF grants included 29 scholarships that were awarded to Neighbor Island high school students and 34 scholarships awarded to O‘ahu high school students.
The 65 include 52 scholarships of $5,000 each to graduates attending Mainland universities, 11 scholarships of $5,000 each to graduates attending Hawai‘i universities, and the two, $10,000 awards to Abadilla and Weiss.
Financial support for the HRYF scholarships comes from the state’s 48 Rotary clubs, including the six on Kaua‘i: Hanalei, Po‘ipu Beach, Kaua‘i (Lihu‘e), Kalepa Sunrise, West Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a.
The state’s 48 Rotary clubs receive applications from students, and each club selects two applications to send to the nine areas (Kaua‘i is one area) so that scholarships are given to students from all over the islands, the release states.
