James Yamamoto, a contributor to the TGI Travel section, speaks from experience as he took his turn manning the flying saucer grills at the West Kaua‘i Hongwanji, Hanapepe temple bon dance over the weekend, joining members of Taiko Kaua‘i who were helping cook between performances.
This week’s bon dance moves to the Lihu‘e Hongwanji Mission in Kapaia and chair Ted Inouye is inviting everyone to come and enjoy.
Hats off to Veronica Pablo and Derek Kawakami on doing a great job hosting the 52nd annual Miss Kaua‘i Filipina pageant, Saturday night. Kudos to Liza Trinidad and Charlmaine Bulosan on a great pageant. Shelly Gerardo and her sister Tammy Pu‘u (no keiki hula this year) were at bon dance on Friday so they could get to the pageant Saturday.
Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. had his mom as one of the judges along with Mel Rapozo and Ian Jung (just saw dad Jim Jung with Dr. Monty Downs at the Wilcox Kids Summer Fest), and Ernie Pasion even had a “speaking part” as auditor for the event.
