LIHU’E — A group of dads plans to celebrate the joys of fatherhood with their children at Lihu‘e Lanes this Saturday and are inviting others to join them, a county news release states.
Elwood Machado, Kaua‘i representative to the Hawai’i State Commission on Fatherhood, is spearheading the bowling event, which is slated for 12 to 3 p.m.
“It’s a great opportunity for dads to meet other dads who share their perspective on the important role that fathers play in their keiki’s lives,” said Machado, noting that nearly the entire bowling alley has been reserved for the father’s event.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr., who served on HSCF for four years, echoed Machado’s sentiment.
“June is Father’s Month in Hawai‘i so it’s a great time to highlight the contributions that a father makes to his children’s lives,” said the mayor. “I encourage dads to join us for a free game of bowling with their keiki, and at the same time they can pick up informational brochures on resources available for fathers.”
Also in the works is the move to re-energize the Kaua‘i’s Dads’ Coalition.
“We want to bring dads from across the island together and discuss best practices in programs and services for fathers, plan future father-child focused events, and maybe even recommend public policies and practices that support fathers,” said Machado.
The next meeting for the Kaua’i’s Dads’ Coalition is scheduled for July 14, 5:30 to 7 p.m., in the Liquor Commission conference room, which is located at the Lihu‘e Civic Center in the Mo‘ikeha Building.
The Hawai’i State Commission on Fatherhood was established by Act 156 in 2003 and falls under the state Department of Human Services.
