LIHU‘E — A quartet of Kaua‘i high school students have joined more than 1,400 other high school students in Washington, D.C. for the Rural Electric Youth Tour.
Beau Acoba of Waimea High, Morgan Azeka of Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama, Taylor Langstaff of Kapa‘a High and Erin-Marie Navarro of Kaua‘i High were sent off on the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative 2010 youth tour by KIUC Member Services Manager Barbara Nagamine and KIUC Board Secretary David Iha, Tuesday night at Lihu‘e Airport, states a KIUC press release.
During the tour, students are learning about electric cooperatives, American history and the U.S. government, having an opportunity to visit with Hawai‘i’s congressional delegation.
Seminars and tours through Washington, D.C. are included, the release states.
Students were selected by their respective high schools and interviewed by a panel made up of a KIUC board member, a KIUC employee and a member of the cooperative.
The Rural Electric Youth Tour has been hosting high school students to Washington, D.C. each year since the late 1950s with more than 40,000 students from rural areas and small towns across America having participated in this program.
