LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Fire Department and state Airport Crash Fire firefighters spent several hours the afternoon and evening of Memorial Day battling a pesky brush fire near Lihu‘e Airport.
And 11 KFD firefighters returned to the scene Tuesday morning to extinguish any remaining hot spots, states a county press release.
The fire began at around 4:46 p.m. Monday, burned roughly eight acres along the south edge of one of the airport’s runway, and was deemed under control at around 7 p.m.
A state Department of Transportation spokesperson said no flights were delayed or canceled as a result of the fire, though smoke did drift over one of the runways.
There were no injuries, and no structures were threatened by the fire, the county release states.
In addition to units from the KFD Lihu‘e, Kapa‘a and Kalaheo stations, Airport Crash Fire and Air 1 responded as well.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
