WAILUA — Pono Tokioka finished with the best round of the day, but could not overcome the 36-hole lead built by Levi Miyashiro last week at the 54-hole Chica Ishii stroke play golf tournament.
Golfers worked through a crowded Sunday field at Wailua Golf Course, battling through brisk northeast trades that kept flags fluttering all day.
“We’ve got the ladies’ qualifier ahead of us, and ahead of them is a Sunday field, so I think we’re doing alright,” said Ron Peeren, the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association tournament chair, at the crossing. “At the pace we’re going, we should be done in about four hours and 20 minutes. Any tournament we can finish in less than four and a half hours is a good tournament.”
Golfers participating in the tournament had to be KJGA members and Daezsa Tomas and Taylor Viquelia had exemptions so they could participate in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links championship that preceded the field of the Chica Ishii tournament.
Tomas finished the day with a five-over-par 77, the best of the girls and the third-best score of the day for the Ishii tournament.
But those top scores could not topple the leaders as Levi Miyashiro, finishing the round with a 79, topped the 15-18 Boys Championship bracket with a three-round total 229 (77-73-79). Tokioka finished second at 234 (82-77-75), followed by Reyn Morioka at 252 (77-86-89).
Braeden Robley (87-87-80-254), Kai Adachi (87-87-85f-259), Justin Uegawa (89-95-89-273) and Daniel Miller (91-88-97-276) rounded out the division.
Viquelia finished the final round with an 81 and was able to hold off Tomas’ low score Sunday. Viquelia took the 13-18 Girls Championship bracket with a three-round 239 (79-79-81) to Tomas’ 247 (84-86-77). Naea Oda rounded out the field with a 282 (92-93-97).
Ken Miyata finished the final round shooting a 76 to end up topping the 13-14 Boys Championship division with a three-round 245 (88-81-76). Bryden Salvador (90-93-82-265) and KC Loo (89-89-90-268) rounded out that division’s leaderboard.
Landen Ishida topped the 13-14 Boys “A” Flight on a 297 (96-102-99) followed by Michael Miller (97-107-103-307) finishing a stroke ahead of Vance Tokita (109-96-103-308).
Trevor Kua, whose brother T.J. is a strong golfer for the University of Hawai‘i, ended a stroke ahead of Reece Valencia during the final round, Kua carding a 95 to Valencia’s 96.
Kua topped the 12 & Under Championship bracket with a three-round 262 (83-84-95) over Valencia’s 293 (100-97-96). Keith Jose (93-97-103-293) and Kalau Tanaka-Pesamino (99-89-109-297) rounded out that field.
Rilen Loo eked out a one-stroke advantage over Logan Gibson during the final round, shooting an 84 to Gibson’s 85 to end up taking the 10 & Under Junior Tees division with a 258 (83-91-84). Gibson finished with a 259 (86-88-85) after both golfers tied at 174 following 36 holes last week.
Peeren said with school letting out for the summer, KJGA is planning on a tournament in June, a couple of tournaments in July and one in August to round out the summer program.
