LIHU‘E — Making her Kaua‘i debut, Maestro violinist Kala Ramnath, joined by world-renowned rhythm weaver Ty Burhoe, will perform together for Tala Records’ concert series 7:30 p.m. today at the Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center.
Committed to bringing Indian classical music to Hawai‘i, Burhoe and Tala Records have, in each of the last four years, brought such classical Indian genre luminaries as Roshan Bhartiya, Shubhendra Rao, Steve Oda and now Kala Ramnath to the islands to perform.
Ramnath is the contemporary torch bearer of the Mewati Gharana Hindustani classical musical ideology. Her violin-playing has revolutionized the technique of playing the instrument by taking the violin so close to vocal music that today her violin is called “The Singing Violin.”
She has won the acclaim of critics worldwide. Besides being a household name in India, she has performed in international festivals such as the World Music Festival in Montreal, Canada, Rhythms of India in Ottawa, Canada, and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town, South Africa, a release states.
Independent label Tala Records’ founder Burhoe has been a disciple of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain since 1990. From that time Burhoe has been dedicated to music as a career and spiritual path. Through his teacher’s inspiration he has established new territory for the tabla which continues to attract international acclaim. He is known for his sensitive accompaniment and melodious style. He has been featured on soundtracks for film and video, including the Academy-Award-winning documentary, “Born into Brothels.”
Tickets for the concert are $20. Visit talarecords.com to purchase tickets or buy them at the door.
