LIHU‘E — With the sighting of a well-known actress in the Kinipopo Shopping Village and Kaua‘i being in the midst of a trio of films being done here, you might be in the company of stars May 29.
The Aston Kaua‘i Beach at Makaiwa, in conjunction with the County of Kaua‘i, the Kapa‘a Business Association, the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a and the Kaua‘i Food Bank, invite the public to its 1st Annual “Kaua‘i Celebrates Hollywood” event which will run formally from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
“We will have the eHawaiian band from the Big Island coming over to join some of our local entertainers,” said Chef Rafael Camarillo who will be overseeing a variety of specials for the event.
“Some of the early people signing up to entertain include Mary Lardizabal and her Kapa‘a Middle School chorus, and a taiko group. We want people to be able to come and kanikapila, or jam, too.”
Kenny Ishii of the Kapa‘a Business Association said when he contacted the eHawaiian band, they got excited about coming here to perform.
Additionally, there will be a beach volleyball tournament which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to benefit the Kapa‘a High School volleyball programs, Ishii said.
Those games will be played on the beach fronting the Waipouli resort, with about two dozen teams expected on the sand.
Harvey Maeda and the Kaua‘i Classic Cars will host a variety of Kaua‘i’s vintage, classic and even some race cars similar to the Back to the ‘60s event hosted by the Aston resort earlier in the year.
“We want this to be a community event, and people like the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a will be on hand along with several other community groups,” Camarillo said.
“We want other groups and the people to be able to benefit from this. It should be a lot of fun.”
Camarillo said Kaua‘i Film Commissioner Art Umezu wanted the event to be not just a celebration of one film, but of the film industry where Kaua‘i has been selected to be the centerpiece for a lot of major films.
Some members of the cast and crew of both the Disney “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and Adam Sandler’s “Just Go With It,” are staying at the hotel.
