LIHU‘E — Koa Smith came up just shy of a first-place finish at the Crustaceous Oaks Summer Camp Championships, Saturday at Newport Beach, Calif.
Smith, 14, led the final heat in the Groms competition until a big late score from Colin Moran, surfing at his home break. Moran put up a 16.17 for the final, with Smith coming in at 13.33.
Koa, a member of the Kaua‘i Smith surf family, made it through the initial field of 56 of the top young surfers in the world and grabbed $2,000 for his second-place haul.
Hawai‘i’s Ian Gentil and Brazil’s Wesley Santos rounded out the top four.
Australia’s Mitch Coleborn made the long trip to the Mainland and it turned out to be worth his while, as he finished first in the Pro-Am competition for $10,000.
Carlos Munoz won the Juniors event, besting Hawai‘i’s Tanner Hendrickson and Keanu Asing, who finished in second and third, respectively. Brazil’s Santiago Muniz took fourth. Munoz pocketed $7,000 for his top finish.
American Quincy Davis won the Girls event for $4,000, topping fellow American Sara Taylor in second, while Hawai‘i’s Bailey Nagy and Kelia Moniz took third and fourth, respectively.
Hawai‘i’s Albee Layer came through the 12-man field in the Air Show to claim the first-place prize of $2,000.
In the Pro-Am, Kaua‘i’s Tyler Newton and Chris Foster each made the semfinal heat, but were just edged out in the first run of the day by Americans Nat Young and Cody Thompson. Thompson moved on in second with a 10.17, while Newton and Foster scored 10.00 and 9.20, respectively.
