Lenore Klass may be out of the running for the $1 million grand prize, but earned one of three special awards at the Pillsbury Bake-Off competition in Orlando, Fla., Monday.
According to information posted on the Pillsbury Web site, the four category winners will be flying to Chicago where the winner of the $1 million will be announced live on The Oprah Winfrey Show today.
Niki Plourde of Gardner, Mass., was selected the winner of Breakfast & Brunches, Evelyn Henderson of Roseville, Calif., topped the Entertaining Appetizers category, Kellie White of St. Louis, Mo., was the winner in Dinner Made Easy and Sue Compton of Delanco, N.J., earned top honors in Sweet Treats.
In addition to the category winners, three special award winners included Klass taking the Jif Peanut Butter Award, Heather Halonie of Webster, Wisc., taking the Crisco is Cooking award and Laura Stanke of Maple Grove, Minn., earning the General Electric Imagination at Work award.
For her prize, Klass earned $5,000 in addition to the trip to Florida awarded to each of the 100 finalists. She also earned a GE countertop microwave oven and $100.
The category winners received $5,000 and a GE Profile Induction Free-Standing range for a total value of approximately $8,300.
Klass’ entry into the Pillsbury Bake-Off was a Banana-Peanut Butter Cream Tart which featured apple bananas growing in the yard of her Po‘ipu home.
This was her first entry into the national contest which celebrated its 60th anniversary, Monday.
