LIHU‘E — Four people were injured Sunday night in a one-car crash on Kuhio Highway near the Coconut Marketplace in Waipouli, according to a county press release.
One of the four, a female passenger in the back seat of the vehicle, suffered serious head injuries and was flown to The Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu.
According to the release, the male driver heading northbound on the highway crossed the center line and the southbound lane and hit a utility pole.
The driver sustained injuries to his knee that require surgery.
The front-seat female passenger suffered back injuries, and the rear-seat infant passenger suffered a broken leg and was being treated at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
It took three American Medical Response ambulances to transport the injured, states the release.
The accident happened around 10:11 p.m., and Kaua‘i Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the cause of the crash, the release states.
The highway did not close during Sunday night’s investigation.
The names of the driver and passengers will not be released until the families have been contacted, the release states.
