LIHU‘E — Waimea’s Moses Fierro picked up two state times and Kaua‘i’s Kawehi Louis-Diamond finished with a state time to lead their respective teams, Friday.
Waimea High School boys finished the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying track meet with 89 points to Kaua‘i’s 75 points and Kapa‘a’s 51 points without the inclusion of field event results.
Kaua‘i’s women accumulated 131 points over Waimea’s 102 points and Kapa‘a’s 43 points without the inclusion of field event results.
Kapa‘a’s Rachel Hinkel chipped out a slim lead over Jayme Jacinto of Waimea and Louis-Diamond in the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles.
With the race in hand, Hinkel headed for the last hurdle with a state time within grasp only to stumble before sprawling out on the track for a DNF (did not finish).
“I really practiced for this one,” Hinkel said following the meet. “I didn’t do any other event.”
Jacinto passed the fallen hurdler to finish first on a 48.89 run, good for the new state standard of 49.14 which was revised on April 5.
But Jacinto came up steps short in the earlier Girls 100 Meter Hurdles when she stopped the clock at 16.38 for second place, just steps back of Louis-Diamond (16.06). Both first and second places in that event bettered the revised state standard of 16.64.
Kaua‘i’s 4×100 “A” team was still missing the services of its entire team, and coupled with some baton-passing miscues, still topped the field on a 53.02 run, earning a state consideration (54.94).
Waimea’s 4×400 Girls “A” Relay team stopped the clocks at 4:33.25 for another consideration (4:35.84).
Fierro pocketed top honors in the Boys 100 Meter Dash (10.73) and in the Boys 200 Meter Dash (21.82).
“He’s really good,” said Waimea coach Dave Walker. “Last week, he had a 10-second time by hand. This week, he got another 10-second time, electronically. It’s no fluke.”
The top three finishers in the Boys 100 Meter Dash were on state level as following Fierro, Waimea’s Torrey Santiago stopped the clock at 11:07 and Kapa‘a’s Darren Taylor filling the third spot on an 11:33 run. The revised state time for this event is 11:24 and the consideration standard is 11:44.
The Menehune continued with its state run as the Boys 4×400 “A” Relay, running under enthusiastic cheering from fans, captured another state time with a 43:59 run, bettering the revised standard of 44:24.
Kaua‘i’s Joshua Herr, running in the absence of Island School’s Pierce Murphy who is in California for another run, earned a consideration time in the Boys 3000 Meter Run with his 9:58.14, bettering the consideration standard of 10:08.24.
The KIF qualifying continues Thursday when the Rotary Clubs host its annual meet starting at 4 p.m.
